Broadway Show Ticket Sales Analysis For Week Ending 05/26/2013 Show An Increase Close To A Million Dollars In Ticket Revenue For A Successful Spring Season

Broadway Revenue Up By Nearly A Million

Broadway saw a heartening increase of close to a million dollars in total ticket revenue this week, as sales rose from $24,657,284 to $25,537,729. New York City had an influx of tourists for the Memorial Day Weekend holiday, which likely had a positive effect on the Broadway box office on Saturday and Sunday in particular.

A Good Season For Plays

This week's numbers reflect that Broadway's spring season has seen an unusually high number of successful plays. Unlike musicals, which attract the bulk of tourists, plays tend to struggle more on Broadway. But both I'll Eat You Last (starring Bette Midler) and Lucky Guy (starring Tom Hanks) sold out this week, with the latter bringing in over $1 million in sales.

Of course, both of those Broadway plays boast major celebrities seldom seen on stage. However, both The Assembled Parties and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike also came very close to selling out this week, with the latter earning an average paid admission of $95.85.

Top Three Come Close To Two-Million Mark

The three highest-earning Broadway shows this week -- The Lion King, Wicked, and The Book of Mormon -- came very close to making two million. The top earner, The Lion King, reached an impressive $1,916,698.
