In the week ending July 30, 2017, the top earning show in terms of percentage reached of its gross potential was Kinky Boots, which was the 2013 Tony Award winner for Best Musical. Spurred on by the recent addition of pop star Brendon Urie to the cast, Kinky Boots is experiencing a renaissance of its top box office days, which peaked in the holiday season at the end of 2013, as well as late summer 2013 following the show’s Tony success.

This past week, the weekly gross for Kinky Boots was $1,584,103, which is the highest weekly gross since Urie entered the cast. This is an increase of $131,512 from the week before, and the grosses have been steadily increasing for the past 10 weeks.

“Marvin’s Room” On Thin Ice

A Doll's House Part 2 at the John Golden Theatre

In contrast, two plays that are new this season are seriously struggling at the box office. Marvin’s Room began performances following the Tony Awards season, and thus did not stand to benefit from the buzz of awards and nominations.

This Roundabout Theatre Company production is showing the effects of this disadvantageous timing. This past week, Marvin’s Room brought in just $204,947, which represents just 30.7% of its gross potential. With a top ticket price of $149, the average paid admission was $54.05, and the audience was filled up to an average capacity of 64.6%.

"A Doll's House, Part 2" Struggles In Box Office

Marvin's Room cast

Starring Lili Taylor, Janeane Garofalo, and Celia Weston, Marvin’s Room is scheduled to run until August 27, 2017. In addition, A Doll’s House, Part 2 is having a difficult time at the box office. This play was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play, but lost that award to Oslo.

The show was barely surviving until the Tony nominations were announced in May, and then the show began to recover somewhat. However, this past week saw a significant drop in ticket sales, with the weekly gross decreasing by $362,228 to reach a weekly gross of just $284,682, or 39.47% of its gross potential.

Scheduled To Close in January

With a top ticket price of $297, the average paid admission was $55.14, which is down from an average paid admission of $105.19 just the week before. A Doll’s House, Part 2 is scheduled to close on January 7, 2018, if it can last that long.
