Blackbird stars only two actors, a man named Ray (played by Jeff Daniels) and a young woman named Una (played by Michelle Williams). The premise is that 15 years prior, when Una was only 12, Ray and Una had a sexual affair, for which Ray has spent many years in prison. He has only just resuscitated his life and has been living under a new name when Una tracks him down by his photograph.
What's Blackbird Like?
Blackbird is a play written by David Harrower which premiered in 2005 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. This is a very high quality production of an excellent play. The play is produced by Scott Rudin, who is well known for bringing to life, very exciting combinations with A-list actors and quality theatrical material. Starring two established Hollywood stars coming to the stage for a contemporary classic, Blackbird is poignant, heart wrenching and very well- executed. The play encompasses a lengthy and difficult conversation in which Una displays her variety of conflicting emotions over the affair, from anger to attachment to confusion to curiosity.
Is Blackbird Good for Kids?
Due to dealing with adult themes, the show may be most appropriate for children aged 12 and up. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
Blackbird on Broadway Background
This production is directed by Joe Mantello, who directed the show’s American premiere in 2007 at the Manhattan Theatre Club, as well as the following production of the show in San Francisco at American Conservatory Theatre. Mantello is not only one of the most experienced and frequently working director on Broadway, he also has specific experience directing this play. This is the first production of the play on Broadway, and also the first Broadway production of any of David Harrower’s plays, although he has had a very successful career all over the world since his first play premiered 20 years ago in Edinburgh.
Michelle Williams, who made a name for herself long ago on television’s Dawson’s Creek and has continued to star in many films after the hit TV drama series, was seen on Broadway once before, as Sally Bowles in Joe Masteroff's Cabaret (2014). This will be her first performance in a straight play on Broadway. This is Jeff Daniels’ fifth time performing on Broadway, with his last outing in 2009 in God of Carnage, and previous productions including Redwood Curtain in 1993, The Golden Age in 1984, and Fifth of July in 1980.
