Fun Home tells the story of Alison Bechdel as she copes with the struggles of coming into her own as a lesbian and finding the courage to accept and embrace her true self, despite her father’s disapproval. The play is told in a non-linear fashion as Alison chronicles three different time periods of her life: childhood, her college-years (where she develops the courage to embrace her homosexuality), and her adulthood.
What's Fun Home Like?
This Broadway show is inventive and bold, dealing with the protagonist Alison (who is the actual writer of the graphic novel, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomicl). Following the death of her father, she tells the story of his unique life and personality, including the family secrets he concealed. The story flips between her past (when she was a little girl playing at her family’s funeral home) to the present (when she deals with her own sexuality and truths she would rather not face about her father). Historically making its mark on the Great White Way, this is the first mainstream musical whose story focuses on a young lesbian. This makes it a groundbreaking piece of work that transfers from Off-Broadway to the Broadway stage.
Is Fun Home Good for Kids?
Due to adult subject matter, the show may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
