In an attempt to pay homage to a vanishing Hollywood world being pushed out by the corporate drones, La La Land is as dutiful as it is endearing - sweet, if a little sour, too. It's a story as old as Hollywood and jazz, and Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone feel like a pairing for the ages.
