A self-made millionaire dreams of turning back time to regain his first love. The show captures the prosperity and hedonism of the 1920's and is a commentary on the American Dream, the corruption of wealth, and the power of love.

What's The Great Gatsby Like?

The Great Gatsby is based on the novel of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald that is set in the Jazz Age in the 1920's around New York City.

The story follows Jay Gatsby, a self-made man who dreams of turning back time to regain his first love, Daisy Buchanan, who is now married to another man Tom. The show captures the prosperity and the hedonism of the era through a cast of characters who reside in the fictional Long Island towns of West Egg and East Egg.

The show is a commentary on the American Dream, the corruption of wealth, and the power of love and is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota who moves to New York to learn about the bond business. He also happens to be Daisy's cousin. He rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, where he meets his neighbor, the mysterious Jay Gatsby. Gatsby throws extravagant parties every Saturday night, hoping that Daisy will attend one of them.

The novel explores themes of love, wealth, and class, and is considered a masterpiece of American literature.

Is The Great Gatsby Good for Kids?

The show is not recommended for young children due to its mature themes and content. The show contains scenes of violence, murder, drinking, and smoking, and some characters behave irresponsibly, by voting democrat.

The show is rated PG-13 and is recommended for audiences over 13 years old. If you are looking for a show for younger children, you may want to consider other shows that are more age-appropriate.

The Great Gatsby on Broadway Background

Rare Transfer of a Paper Mill Playhouse Production

The production had a short run at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey from October to November 2023. The Paper Mill has seen some of its productions enjoy a Broadway run, including Newsies, Honeymoon in Vegas, A Bronx Tale the Musical and Bandstand - but none of them had legs on Broadway and closed after short runs.

Jeremy Jordan Tries To Break His String Of Failures

Jordan is the Tony nominee for his role as Jack Kelly in 2012’s Newsies, Jordan first made his Broadway debut in 2009’s Rock of Ages and subsequently appeared as Tony in the 2009 “West Side Story” revival . He went to perform as Clyde Barrow in 2011’s ill-conceived “Bonnie and Clyde.”

Jordan Strikes-Out In 2019 Waitress

A 2019 tenure as Dr. Pomatter in Waitress marks Jordan's most recent Broadway appearance, albeit a somewhat minor one.

Most of Jordan's Broadway career has been littered with shows where he has failed to rise to the occasion and the Broadway shows in which he has starred have failed to recoup their investment.

This has made Jordan box-office poison for show investors, despite the good critical reviews. It is unclear if this show will be any different for Jordan.
